Clan History

Clan Stewart

Arms of the Chief of Clan Stewart

Clan Stewart (Gaelic: Stiùbhard) is a Highland Scottish clan. The clan is recognised by Court of the Lord Lyon[1], however it does not have a clan chief recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms.

Because the clan has no chief it can be considered an armigerous clan; however the Earls of Galloway[2] are now considered to be the principal branch of this clan, and the crest and motto of The Earls of Galloway's arms are used in the Clan Stewart crest badge.

The Court of the Lord Lyon recognises two other 'Stewart' clans, Clan Stuart of Bute and Clan Stewart of Appin.

Clan Stuart of Bute is the only 'Stewart' clan at present which has a "recognised" chief[3].

As an Army veteran with service related disabilities, I am limited to copy and paste information. Don't know much about my ancestors and would like to join any group that might help myself or other Stewarts unlock the mysteries of our origins. Also interested in Y-DNA testing. Any ideas on the best way to go with that ? Thank you possible cousins :)

Joining the Scotland Project on g2g will start with following the Tartan Trail, which will help you to learn where to find sources for Scotland ancestors and how to write the sources into the profiles.

Wikitree is not directly involved with DNA testing. All you would do is enter where you took a DNA test and what the Kit number was. You would have to use gedmatch or something else to compare your test results with others.

To join the Stewart Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

If a research page does not yet exist for your particular area of interest, please contact the Name Study Coordinator: Allan Stuart for assistance.

Check the g2g entry for joining the Scotland Tartan Trail which would be the 1st step. It looks like you are fairly new to Wikitree, so welcome to Wikitree.

Doug McCallum, Scotland Project Co-Leader and Leader contact for Clans projects has informed me that all existing and would be members of this (and any other) sub project MUST be members of the Scotland project before joining any sub project.

Would all existing members of this sub project please ensure that they comply with this request.

Hi,

My name is Kimberly Kelly and one of my paternal lines is Stewart. I am excited about learning more about the Stewart Name Study and hopefully participating in it.

Hi Joshua, (same name as my grandson).

You can add the Clan Stewart tag right now as your surname allows it.

Best regards

Allan Stuart.

p.s. I can always do with help expanding the information on this great clan.

Thanks Allan! I am already on the waiting list for the Scotland Project. Hopefully, I’ll start the Tartan Trail soon and become a full member.

By the way, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the work you have done with Stewart profiles. When I arrived here I didn’t have to go very far up my tree to connect to your work and it made my studies a lot easier. Hopefully, I can add some knowledge and clarity to your efforts here and return the favor.

Question: Do I need to wait until I complete the Tartan Trail before I add the Clan Stewart tag to my profile?

Greetings all,

I am interested in joining the Stewart Name Study. I have a few branches of Stewart in my tree and it’s my surname. I am also a lifetime member of the Stewart Society.

My main interest is finding where my YDNA originates. We are currently stuck in North Carolina with my 5th great-grandfather Charles Stewart, born in 1761 and soldier in the American Revolution. He has been confused with William Stewart’s (of Ledcreigh) son Charles, born around the same time and location for decades now.

My paternal grandmother is also a Stewart through her father’s line (which is much less murky) and can be traced back to John Stewart 1st of Dalswinton and Garlies on Wikitree: Stewart-3688

I have yet to discover any more lines of Stewart in my tree but I have barely touched my mother’s side of the tree. The above is from my paternal grandparents.

I would love to participate in this project.
